“The most important point, however, is the character of the building itself. Not only does the systematic, rather repetitious pattern of the concrete grille express the computer-world character of the IBM Corp., but also gives it a sense of belonging in the sun. The deep shadows of the grillwork become as significant a part of the architecture as any part of the structure itself.”                   -Vladimir Ossipoff, “Building Designed for the Sun,” Feb. 6, 1966
The IBM Building, Honolulu. Designed by Vladimir Ossipoff, the founder of Hawaii Modernism, and built in 1962 as part of his “War on Ugliness,” it’s under constant threat of demolition. It’s sitting on prime real estate, after all, right across from a Whole Foods.

"Our work of love should be to reclaim masculinity and not allow it to be held hostage to patriarchal domination. There is a creative, life-sustaining, life-enhancing place for the masculine in a non-dominator culture. And those of us committed to ending patriarchy can touch the hearts of real men where they live, not by demanding that they give up manhood or maleness, but by asking that they allow its meaning to be transformed, that they become disloyal to patriarchal masculinity in order to find a place for the masculine that does not make it synonymous with domination or the will to do violence."

Men are astonished.
We are astonished that they are astonished.
And now we come to the problem.

isthisfeminist:

This woman is reading. IS THIS FEMINIST?
No. The Western canon is white and male-dominated. This woman is lending her support to structures of male domination as embodied within the academy. Also, she is standing under a ladder, which means seven years of continued sexist oppression. PROBLEMATIC.
